Genre

Pop Folk

The pop folk genre is one of a pop genre with folk musical arrangements, mainly with instruments of an acoustic guitar. This is the genre of our music video to 'Life Happens'.

I feel this genre is an umbrella term to which many artists incorporate in their own way. These are some of the artist which fall within this genre: Ben Howard, Lucy Rose, Birdy, Mumford & Sons and Jake Bugg.

All of these artists have videos which have a very natural feel and a lot of camera handheld/free movement. What the pop folk video genre have in common is that all of their videos are simple yet effect and the video is seen a lot from the artist point of view. I think the videos enable the audience to really connect with the artist and have a true understanding to the songs. This is a quality that I want to portray within our music video; to state that we have a pop folk genre song.

Brandon & Leah

Brandon and Leah are not only a duet but are also husband and wife. Leah is the vocals and Brandon creates and produces the music and together they produce their short film music videos. They are a small and not very well known in the music industry, currently they are on their fourth single, not having created an album. They are well known for being in the limelight due to having a famous name. I personally really like their music and method of being known within the music industry. All of their songs are original and written as a combination. What is different about these two as artist is that all of their videos are made by themselves, this is really seen from the audience and makes them get a feel of how Brandon & Leah are as a peson as well as an artist.

Meeting Four

Today's meeting was very interesting as our whole idea/concept/pitch and song choice had changed. Although the Hey Mickey track was domestically chosen by all of us, as we were planning we came to realize that we were slightly our of our reach; in having all the resources and creating the video to a high standard that we all had in mind. The ideas that we had were ideal for summer but we would be filming in winter which wasn't the setting any of us were going for.  After looking through new unknown artist's videos on Youtube we discovered that doing a video that is simple and very realistic, with home-video style/ handheld shots, can be just as effective. This idea/vision of  a video would be able to capture and relate to our audience. We have chosen a song from an American duo Brandon & Leah called 'Life Happens'. This is a very summery song but we are going to take the winter feel of Christmas and subvert the video into a festive, cold, wintery video.

As well as having this revaluation of changing our song choice, we discovered that one of our group members are unfortunately not in our group anymore. Thus making us a three member group than four. Despite the disappointment and sadness we all had of this group member leaving we are now constructing our work load differently. The fact that our idea has changed with the three of us, we are all on the same page of the original pitch being good, but this idea now having a different effect for the audience.

Meeting Three

Today we wrote down all of our ideas on a piece of paper which we then pitched to our teacher. This was to see if the ideas we had was fee sable and if the song choice we had we alright to do a video for. We got the okay from our teacher, with all the ideas and planning we currently had. We continued to list locations, costumes and props. Catherine worked in a party shop, which was ideal for us as we could use the 80s style rara dresses for our main character. We had also rang up the Yellow Storage company to see if it was possible to rent our space in which we could film. This was because as well as narrative we wanted a performance by a band, this could take place in the rented storage area.

Meeting Two

In today's meeting we discussed our ideas in a constructive and organized way, to collate our ideas and create s pitch. Within this pitch we discussed the narrative and the way in which we were going to incorporate intertextuality, voyeurism and Goodwins's theory. We all had good inputs into the narrative, which constantly extended into further discussions about the way in which we could edit certain types of shots and good locations that we could use.
I felt this meeting was spent well; confirming all the ideas which we needed to decide upon. As a result of this meeting it had given us an opportunity to be noting what we needed to consider in various situations. Overall the discussion was well needed and gave us a good platform to begin thinking of planning and filming.
